As part of the UKCCSRC project, the IMPRES team — Professor
Vahid Niasar, Dr Mehrdad Vasheghani Farahani, and Dr Javad Shokri
— visited Shell’s Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA). The visit provided an excellent platform for
technical exchange, with the team presenting recent progress and
engaging in productive discussions on subsurface energy engineering and CO2 storage. Mehrdad and Javad
also spent a few days at TU Delft, where they participated in a series of insightful discussions centred
on salt precipitation during
CO2 injection — a challenge also addressed within the PINCH project.
The week proved to be highly positive and inspiring, opening up new possibilities for collaboration and
advancing our shared research in porous media.
We sincerely thank our colleagues at Shell and TU Delft for their warm hospitality, engaging lab tours,
and constructive feedback. Special thanks also to UKCCSRC for supporting this collaborative effort.

IMPRES PGR Student Completes Research Visit at TU Delft

We are pleased to share that Saleh Mohammadrezaei, a PhD student in the IMPRES group, recently completed a
fully funded
three-month research visit at TU Delft. Hosted by Dr Rouhi Frajzadeh’s research group, Saleh carried out
laboratory experiments
on hydrate formation in porous media, contributing to carbon capture and storage research.
This work deepened the understanding of hydrate dynamics at the pore scale and further strengthened the
collaborative links between the IMPRES group and TU Delft in subsurface energy systems research.

founded in 2008, is a leading

IMPRES PGR Student Presents at Shell’s Pore Scale Physics Seminar

As part of his funded research stay at TU Delft, Saleh also visited Shell, where he presented his recent
findings at the
Pore Scale Physics Seminar. His talk, titled “Modelling the Drying Process of CO2–Water in
Porous Media with a Novel Volume-of-Fluid Lattice Boltzmann Model”, showed results from his PhD
research within the IMPRES group.
The presentation focused on pore-scale drying mechanisms relevant to carbon capture and storage (CCS), and
was well received by Shell’s research community, contributing to ongoing discussions on modelling strategies
in subsurface systems.

PINCH project: Successful Q3 hybrid update meeting with industrial and academic partners

A highly productive Q3 hybrid update meeting was held at the University of Manchester, bringing together both industrial and academic partners. Delegates from BP, Shell, Equinor, and collaborators from Durham University participated, both in person and online. Insightful discussions were focused on the challenges of salt precipitation during CO2 injection in saline aquifers. The meeting concluded with a tour of the IMPRES lab, where some of the experimental research in subsurface energy engineering was showcased. Thanks to the PINCH and IMPRES team for their dedication in making the project a success!

7th InterPore UK 2024; amazing performance of IMPRES group

The University of Manchester hosted the 7th UK InterPore Conference on
the 9th and 10th of September 2024 at the Royce Institute. Over the
course of two days, more than 60 researchers from the UK and abroad
presented on a wide range of porous media-related topics, spanning
from biological systems to soil, groundwater, fuel cells, underground
hydrogen storage and CCS.
IMPRES PGRs and PDRAs proactively contributed to this event by giving
8 oral and poster presentations. Thanks to the whole team for their
great effort.

IMPRES receives 30k GBP flexible funding from UKCCSRC to investigate capillary suction during CO2 injection in saline aquifers



IMPRES PDRAs Dr Mehrdad Vasheghani Farahani and Dr Mohammadjavad Shokriafra under supervision of Prof Vahid Niasar have secured a £30k research grant to investigate capillary suction induced by brine evaporation and salt precipitation during scCO2 injection in saline and hypersaline aquifers. This research project, in collaboration with Professor Holger Steeb and Dr Nikolaos Karadimitriou from Stuttgart University, is funded by the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC) through flexible funding 2024. IMPRES receives a large EPSRC grant on CCS

Vahid Niasar and collaborators receive £942k (£754k from EPSRC) for subsurface CO2 storage. The project, entitled Performance and Injectivity of CO2 in Hyper-Saline Aquifers - or PINCH - is in collaboration with Princeton University, the University of Stuttgart, bp, Shell, and Equinor. It represents an excellent research development in the discipline of subsurface energy engineering, and addresses major challenges faced in geological CO2 storage. Dr Vahid Niasar of Manchester’s Department of Chemical Engineering is Principal Investigator for the PINCH project, which aims to establish fundamental science to develop a novel predictive model and apply it to real field data supported by industries.
